Make Money Blogging: How To Turn Your Deadbeat Blogs Into Winners!

July 8th, 2010 No comments

Everyday aspiring bloggers scour the Internet looking for the latest tips and tricks to create money making blogs.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of these well-intentioned bloggers will never earn any real money online and it is not for a lack of trying. You may be in this situation! If so, keep reading.

Popular blogging guides like Blogging To The Bank, Bloggers PayBack, Bloggers Paycheck and a host of other less well known tools are bought by marketers in the hope that they will shed the light on how to blog for profits.

I discovered nearly two years ago the real secret to earning money with blogs. In fact, what set me on the right path was Rob Benwells original ebook Blogging To The Bank.

You see, the advice that most of these blogging guides give is sound, but the real challenge is putting all the pieces together. How you monetize is really secondary.

There are 3 things you need to make money blogging:

  1. Targeted Readers. These are people who visit your blog because your provide content that solves there problem. Whatever niche you are in, remember find the problem and then provide solutions.
  2. Relevant Content. Your posts should be related to your niche; that is if you want to make money. It does not matter if it is Google Adsense, Clickbank Affiliate Products, CPA – CJ, Neverblue Ads or your own product. Your content has to relate to your market/niche. If you are in the weight loss niche, posting about dog training is not going to be of real interest to your readers.
  3. Traffic. Traffic is the life blood of your blog. Without it, your blog is dead. The simple fact is that three are inter-related. Good content generates Traffic by attracting visitors . More visitors increase your metrics in Alexa and Google and boost your SERP (Search Engine Rank Position). A higher SERP gets you more visitors.

As you can see, failing to excel at any one of these three can mean disaster for your blog.

But at the core of everything is CONTENT. Content is king! It’s the engine that drives your blog.

Unfortunately, the majority of the estimated 135 million bloggers who create blogs, see little results and abandon their blogs way to early. You see, you can bring your blog back to life and even make some real money in the process.

Are you in this predicament?

Don’t worry, there is light at the end of the tunnel… and no, it’s not the train.

If you are serious about earning money blogging, you must learn 2 important concepts:

  1. Leverage
  2. Automation

The focus of this post is on #2,  automation. I’ll talk about leverage in a separate post.

Automation is overlooked by both  new and even veteran bloggers. For whatever reason, they have yet to realize that Internet Marketing is a war of attrition and all about “scale.”

Just building one single blog typically will not produce the desired results; fast cash, unless you are a skilled professional writer or have some other celebrity attribute that will cause visitors to flock to your blog.

The secret is in creating scores or even hundreds of blogs.

Think Walmart, MacDonalds, RiteAid, K-Mart, Sears. What made them so successful and continues to insure their success today?

Their trademark names are ubiquitous. Where can you go (literally in the world) and not find a Walmart or MacDonalds? They are everywhere with some locations staying open 24 hours a day.

Ever wondered why the local pharmacist or neighborhood grocer went out of business? They could not compete with the scale of these marketing giants. Again, it’s all a matter of scale.

Transfer that concept to your own online blogging network! Do you spend all of your time trying to get one blog to go?

Make Money Blogs: Consider The Following First!

Everyday aspiring Internet Marketers are looking to blogging as a viable way to make money online. But the ever-present question is “how do I do it?”

Answer: One blog at a time.

The prevailing temptation (as a result of massive hype) is to jump into creating a blog, slap on some AdSense ads or an affiliate link, perform a little SEO and voila… just wait for the commission checks to start flying in.

In truth, if it sounds to good to be true; it probably is.

But before you bounce, know that you can make money blogging, if you know how.

To make money blogging requires both knowledge and work your part.

First, let me make it clear that blogs don’t make money; systems do.

Blogs like any other online tool are a means to an end. To succeed you need a plan!

In other words, the notion that starting a blog in itself will somehow reap you windfall online profits is ludicrous.

Before you even start a blog you should consider:

  1. The topic of your blog? What are you going to blog about?
  2. How much time can you commit to writing and posting blog articles?
  3. Which blogging platform will you use? Will it be a free blog service like Blogger or WordPress.com or will you purchase you own domain name and hosting and use blogs powered by WordPress.org?
  4. How will you monetize your blog? Will it be with Affiliate Products, Contextual Ads, Contextual Links, Physical Products, CPA or Selling Ad Space. Or maybe you’ve decided to flip your blogs once they achieve a certain level of readership and income.
  5. Where will you get content? Research?

The choice is up to you, but it is important to think about these things before you start your blog.

The #1 Reason most bloggers fail to make money with blogs is they do not do their homework.  Your homework begins with research; niche research and keyword research.

For example, you may be interested or motivated by underwater basket weaving. But if no-one is spending money on Underwater Basket Weaving guides or products, it won’t matter how good your blog is, you’ll never make a dime.

Proper research will save you time, money and frustration.

Another major thing to consider is TRAFFIC./strong>

Traffic is the life blood of your blog. For that reason, learning how to drive traffic, targeted traffic, will mean the difference between making sales or not.

Marketing online is about numbers; Click rates, Click-Through-Rates, Conversion Rates, etc.

Which brings us to “Tracking.” Tracking your efforts and results will allow to to precisely evaluate the effectiveness of your marketing efforts.

For most bloggers, tracking is an after-thought. By the time they get around to it, if they ever do; weeks, if not months of valuable time and effort have been wasted.

So, before you start, spend some time thinking about what it is you want to accomplish and what resources (paid or free) will be needed in order for your to succeed.

Ways to Make Money With Blogs…

While there are a myriad of ways to profit from blogs, there are essentially three ways to make money blogging.

  1. Sell Ads
  2. Create Your Own Product
  3. Sell Affiliate Products

Selling Ads. Selling ads is a passive means to create blog profits. This includes everything from Google Adsense to ad placement from individual or corporate entities who pay you to place their ads on your blog. Which ever method of “AD” monetization utilized, they all require massive traffic in order to make them work.

With most Adsense campaigns, you are only going to earn pennies per click. Getting loads of traffic is the key to making money with this method. Despite themes optimized for Adsense or all the tricks you may have heard or read, it all comes down to driving traffic to your Adsense pages. No traffic, no clicks. In the boom days of Adsense, marketers created thousands of pages (mostly junk) and slapped Adsense ads on them. Things have changed a lot since then. We’ll discuss Adsense in detail later when we look at monetization.

Another popular service is Chitika Contextual Ads.

Another method of monetizing with ads is to charge a fee to businesses who want to advertise their company or products on your blog. Typically, this only works when your blog is an authority site and generates  massive daily traffic. In essence, your site becomes a “bill-board” of sorts for advertisers.

Create Your Own Product. By far, creating your own product has the potential for huge profits. You can recruit affiliates to promote your product or promote it all by yourself. Either way, you have a greater degree of control. On the other hand, it generally takes weeks or months to create a product, test it in the marketplace, create marketing materials, hire a copywriter, set up support services, etc.,  and launch the product to the world. While the profit potential is high, most people are not ready, at least initially to create their own product.

Sell Other Peoples Stuff. Otherwise known as Affiliate Marketing. Essentially you are an independent contractor who is paid a commission when someone makes a purchase through your affiliate link. You are responsible for marketing the product to buyers. The better you are able to do this, the more money you make. The beauty is, you do not have to stock inventory, there is no customer service worries and you do not have to create a product.

Clickbank, PaydotCom, and Amazon are examples of major Affiliate Marketing sites where you can simply sign-up and begin marketing products. Clickbank and PayDotcom sell digital products almost exclusively.

Amazon, and sites like Commission Junction (Cost Per Action marketing) sell physical products.

Blog Flipping. While not a monetization strategy per se, Blog Flipping is a credible method of profiting from blogs. With this method, you create niche blogs with the purpose of selling them in the future. The tactic is to build the blog, build up the blog traffic, monetize the blog and then sell it as a ready made profit center that can be further developed by the blog purchaser.

These methods and others will be covered later when we discuss monetization.
